Apotheosis of the Eucharist (Apoteosis de la Eucaristía)

Juan Rodríguez Juárez Mexican

Not on view

This monumental oval painting of the adoration of the Holy Sacrament by Saint Francis and Saint Colette (or Saint Clare) formerly adorned the main altar of the convent church of Corpus Christi in Mexico City. It was commissioned by the convent’s patron, Viceroy Baltasar de Zúñiga y Guzmán, Marquis of Valero (r. 1716–22). The painting’s soft chromatic range, smooth application of paint, ethereal lighting effects, and graceful figures are touchstones of Juan Rodríguez Juárez’s work, heralding a new style that was emulated by local painters throughout the century.
