Transom window from the entrance hall of the Worsham-Rockefeller House

John La Farge American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 743

This transom window by John La Farge is one of three identical compositions installed in the bay window of the entrance hall of Arabella Worsham’s (later Mrs. Collis Huntington) townhouse, located at 4 West 54th Street. The lush swag of fruit tied with a blue garland and trailing ribbons on an opalescent background complemented a large central leaded-glass window, also by La Farge, that depicted the Roman goddess Ceres. Though the townhouse was ultimately demolished in 1938, various elements of the interior—including the house’s dressing room (2009.226.18)—were preserved to document the luxury of New York’s Gilded Age.
