Portrait of Doña Maria Tomasa Durán López de Cárdenas (Retrato de doña María Tomasa Durán López de Cárdenas)

Juan Patricio Morlete Ruiz Mexican

Not on view

The genre of this portrait, which depicts a young woman on the eve of entering a convent, reached its apogee in the second half of the eighteenth century. The painting follows established pictorial conventions: the sitter is shown in three-quarter view against a velvet curtain, and her pose, as well as her attire and the objects with which she is depicted, serve as markers of social standing. She wears a short jacket and a richly patterned skirt; a triangular stomacher (pechera) over her chest; sleeves and collars embellished with lace trim; a lavish choker, bracelets, and rings made of gold, pearls and precious stones; and chiqueadores ( artificial beauty marks) on her face. Her closed fan symbolizes her soon-to-be-married state. An elaborate inscription names the sitter, her parents, the place and date of her birth, and the day and convent where she professed. Being admitted to a convent was a badge of honor among New Spain’s elite, as nuns were believed to safeguard the spiritual well-being of the viceroyalty.
