Flower Basket (Hineri-gumi hanakago)
Kosuge Kōgetsu Japanese
Not on view
An important lineage was established on Sado Island by Kosuge Chikudō (1895–1966), whose sons Shōchikudō and Kōgetsu both became active participants in the local bamboo art scene. Kōgetsu, a student of the tea ceremony, became famous for the “twisted construction” (hineri-gumi) technique seen in this basket, which appeared in the 1976 Japanese Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition. Kōgetsu participated in both the Nitten and the Traditional Art Crafts exhibitions and won prestigious awards for his flower baskets.
