Many of Remington’s drawings were reproduced first in articles and subsequently in books. Such is the case with his portrayal of Lin McLean, a youthful cowboy who stands arms akimbo, outfitted with a Stetson hat, knotted scarf, fringed chaps, and revolver. The drawing first appeared as an illustration for Owen Wister’s story "Destiny at Drybone" in the December 1897 Harper’s Monthly. It later became the frontispiece for Lin McLean, Wister’s novel detailing the adventures of an East Coast man reaching maturity in Wyoming Territory.
