Girl's robe

Arapaho, Native American

Not on view

The design on this garment, known as box and border, traditionally appeared on women’s robes. It is believed to represent the internal structure of the buffalo, while the border references the animal’s outstretched shape. The artist chose a soft green as the background color, which counterbalances the vivid red, black, and white forms and the wash of red ocher covering the outer edges.
