This fine portrait, signed by the distinctive artist Isma‘il Jalayir, depicts Mirza ‘Ali Asghar Khan, the most powerful minister in the government of Nasir al-Din Shah of Iran (r. 1848–1896). One of the most intriguing artists of the nineteenth century, Jalayir was trained and taught at the Dar al-Funun, Iran’s first modern institution of higher learning. Although Jalayir rarely dated his paintings, this work contains a partially legible date that suggests it was painted in A.H. 1299/A.D. 1880. The artist’s work is characterized by the inclusion of myriad details that accentuate the grandeur, glory, and opulence of the court and its dialogue with European conventions of painting.
