Linda Nochlin (1931–2017) was a path-breaking feminist scholar and curator who radicalized the field of art history beginning in the 1970s. She was also an early and astute critic of Neel’s work. Here Nochlin is shown with her daughter Daisy. With her right hand resting on Daisy’s lap, Nochlin performs the same kind of double duty, that of mother and professional, all too familiar to Neel. The artist lavished attention on both sitters’ left hands—Nochlin’s grips the arm of the sofa tightly, tendons popping from her flesh. Similar yet distinct, related yet different, the figures’ hands speak to the passage of traits and histories from one generation to another.
