Tavernier completed at least thirty paintings of Indigenous peoples over the course of his brief career. The artist relied on the many field sketches he made during his travels across the Northern Plains, as well as examples of Native American attire and regalia that he collected along the way and later displayed in his San Francisco studio. These pieces served as visual aids for his paintings and suggested a certain authenticity to his potential clients. Indian Village at Dawn attests to Tavernier’s direct encounters with Indigenous peoples and reveals his substantial abilities as a landscape painter of the American West.
