Rip Van Winkle was designed to be sold as a set with Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and issued in two variants: red cloth with gold stamping and the white coated cloth version shown here. There are twenty-one color stamped tulips on the front cover and four on the spine modeled in two-tone red and yellow to striking effect. The endpapers have a playful wine and carafe design nodding to the tale. It is one of her finest works. Armstrong invented various alphabets that became increasingly distinctive, elegant and refined. Her second alphabet featured here, has broad ascenders and descenders with exaggerated serifs bending at the ends with a flourish. Rip Van Winkle was her last use of this second alphabet.
