Armstrong’s shimmering design evokes both stained glass and Iznik tilework. As a biblical symbol, the pomegranates further reference the book’s setting. Van Dyke’s travel account was issued in two variants: green cloth with white and dark green stamping. Scribner’s colorful Holiday edition is shown here.
