Red lacquer box for an inkstone

Korea

Not on view

The size and shape of this lacquer box suggests that it once held an inkstone and other writing implements and would have been an appropriate accessory on a scholar’s desk. The red lacquer outer surfaces of the box are ornamented with metal fittings. It is further embellished with a carved black lacquer base. The box interior is also lacquered in black. One unusual feature of the box is that its interior also has metal fittings on the corners that required the maker to carefully carve out the corners of the lid’s underside so it will fit over the interior.
