Art treasures of the United Kingdom from the Art Treasures Exhibition, Manchester
Inspired by the world's fairs in London (1851) and Paris (1855), the U.K. Manchester exhibition was restricted to works of art from British collections. It was and remains the largest temporary exhibition of works of art ever assembled in Britain. The Queen and Prince Consort attended along with over 1.3 million visitors. Moore’s passion for glass collecting may have been inspired by a visit to this exhibition, which included the Slade glass collection. The binding by Leighton and Hodge is a near facsimile of a seventeenth century binding that was loaned to the exhibition.
