Author Louis Gonse

On View Gallery Watson Library

Art historian and editor-in-chief of the Gazette des Beaus-Arts, Louis Gonse was one of the first European experts on Japanese art. He began collecting in 1873 and ten years later organized a major retrospective of Japanese art that resulted in this lavishly illustrated two volume work summarizing contemporary research, tastes, and preoccupations of the day’s collectors. He was an influential spokesman for the incorporation of Japanese arts into the collections of western museums. This publication had a limited printing of 1400, of which Moore’s copy is #1152.
