This was one of the earliest publications of an archaeological exploration in Eastern Europe. Duncan McPherson, a British army surgeon during the Crimean War, supervised and documented the excavation of the ancient Greek city of Kertch in eastern Crimea. The range of objects presented here—from glass to ceramics and jewelry—are lavishly illustrated in high quality color lithographed plates and wood engravings.
