Moore considered classical art to be fundamental to the education of aspiring designers. Englefield (1752-1822), a British antiquarian, scientist, mathematician, and author on a range of topics, was a member of numerous societies, including the Dilettante Society, which promoted the study of ancient Greek and Roman art and encouraged contemporary art in that style. Moore and his staff at Tiffany reinterpreted decorations recorded in this volume of Englefield’s extensive collection of Etruscan and Greek vases.
