A German businessman-turned-archeologist, Heinrich Schliemann devoted the second half of his life to finding the ancient sites named in the stories of Homer, and his discoveries were met with great popular enthusiasm. Moore would have been familiar with Schliemann’s work because of his frequent dispatches to newspapers on the progress of his archeological digs.
