Eugenia Huici Arguedas de Errázuriz (1860–1951) was born in Chile to a wealthy Bolivian family. She married Jose Tomas Errázuriz, an amateur landscape painter from a celebrated wine-making family, and persuaded him to move to Paris, where his brother-in-law Ramón Subercaseaux was Chilean consul. Subercaseaux introduced her to Sargent.
Sargent shows Eugenia in profile, wearing a dark cloak against a striking gold background. The sparse highlights in her hair enliven the portrait, and the thick, boldly rendered, and irregular strokes give the impression of a rapidly executed sketch. The dramatic palette and the rich, brushy handling recall the works of Édouard Manet, who died in 1883, around the time this portrait was painted, and whom Sargent greatly admired.
