Ramón Subercaseaux in a Gondola

In September 1880, Sargent rented a studio on the Grand Canal in Venice. Several other artists were also there, including Ramón Subercaseaux (1854–1937), a noted writer and artist, who had been Chilean consul in Paris since 1874. Sargent’s portrait of Subercaseaux’s wife, a success at the Paris Salon in 1881, hangs nearby.
Here, Sargent contrasts the shadowy interior of the gondola with the sparkling reflection of light on the water. Subercaseaux is shown seated, with a sketchbook and a watercolor box on his lap, gazing intently at the figure opposite, by implication Sargent. If Subercaseaux created a portrait of Sargent, its whereabouts are unknown.
