The image of Christ trampling the heads of beasts is surrounded by references to God as protector. The inscription framing the central image translates as “Majesty, who reigns over all things, who crushes those who oppose you, and who casts away those who are not with you, save us lowly creatures, we beseech you, caring one.” Beneath one of the square rock crystals is the name Ratmann, the monk who donated the manuscript to Saint Michael’s in 1159.
