Statuette of the Provincial Governor Ukhhotep and Family

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

Standing tall in the center of this group, Ukhhotep was descended from generations of provincial governors who ruled part of Middle Egypt and constructed rock-cut tombs at the nearby cemetery of Meir. Two wives flank Ukhhotep, but it is impossible to know whether the regional magnate had concurrent spouses or simply remarried. The highly unconventional placement of the daughter—in front of her father—creates a sense of heartwarming intimacy among the family members.
