Round Military Ration Token
Middle Kingdom
Not on view
This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
Soldiers stationed at fortresses in Lower Nubia kept track of their rations with the help of wood tokens incised with texts indicating the amount of bread the owner was entitled to receive every ten days. It is shaped like a round, flat bread, similar to the type still popular in Egypt. Bread was the main staple of the ancient Egyptian diet.
