This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
This statue of Senwosret was produced for his small commemorative chapel at Abydos. He is shown wearing the pointed wig and long kilt fashionable among high officials of the earlier Thirteenth Dynasty. The lack of perfect symmetry and the somewhat unflattering proportions of his facial features typify the output of the Abydos workshop, which specialized in mass production of votive monuments for the pilgrims who flocked annually to this sacred city.
