Ansdell's output throughout the 1850s and 1860s was dominated by genre subjects. Here he presents a smartly dressed woman and small child, perhaps on a rural excursion, encountering two mottled calves in a field. Cousen engraved a number of works after Ansdell and this print was first published in April 1869 by the leading art periodical of the time, "The Art Journal". The accompanying text lavished praise on the printmaker's varied technique: "Mr. Cousen has done full justice to the subject; he has used his graver with great delicacy, and with due attention to textures, resulting in a brilliant print."
