Prayer Bead with the Crucifixion and Jesus Carrying of the Cross

Netherlandish

Not on view

The boxwood shell of this spectacularly carved prayer bead bears the arms of a prominent couple from Delft in the Netherlands (Eewert Jansz van Bleiswick and Erkenraad Dircksdr van Groenewegen). A number of early owners of miniature boxwood carvings lived in Delft. This bead has a protective case of hammered copper as well as a leather-lined velvet pouch as a means of carrying.
