In the lush eggplant- and inky-toned shadows in the foreground of this photograph are traces of passersby, hinting at the bustling life in one of Milan’s busiest thoroughfares. Down the street (now the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II), the cathedral’s Gothic spires rise, framed by Renaissance and neoclassical palazzi. This particular vantage point was popularized in printed vedute, architectural or city views, before it became a standard in photographs.
