While relatively little-known today, the jewelry and silversmithing partnership of Jane ("Jennie") Carson and Frances B. Barnum was one of the earliest among the female Arts & Crafts metalsmiths. Both women studied at the Cleveland School of Art in Ohio, and each became a member of the prestigious Boston Society of Arts & Crafts in 1902. Carson also studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and with the highly-respected enamelist and teacher, Laurin Hovey Martin (1875–1939). Carson and Barnum exhibited from 1902 until 1905 at the annual exhibition of the arts and crafts at the Art Institute of Chicago. They also exhibited, in collaboration with Cleveland artist Mildred Watkins, at the 1904 World’s Fair—the Louisiana Purchase International Exposition in St. Louis—where the women won a silver medal.
