Po Kim American
Kim studied art amid the harsh realities of Japanese occupation, the Korean War, and postwar division and reconstruction. He studied in Illinois for two years before joining New York’s art scene. Informed by his multifaceted identity, Kim worked in various styles over his long career before turning to trompe l’oeil in the 1970s. This drawing confirms his prowess in the genre, yet it is not merely about exactitude. The blank space and subtle rendering lend it a quiet and elusive quality. Kim and his late wife, Sylvie Walk (also an artist), created a nonprofit gallery in downtown New York that promotes cultural exchange through the arts.
