Following the death of Baudelaire in 1867, Manet designed this etching for publication in a biography and edition of his friend’s collected writings. He based the image on a photograph by Nadar but struggled to achieve a satisfactory translation, abandoning two other plates before this one. Among the rare impressions that Degas acquired from the collection of print connoisseur Philippe Burty was this second-state proof, below which Manet had inscribed the poet’s name in pen and ink.
