Stone book

On View Gallery Watson Library

These three miniature books are made from various stones. Their makers and specific purposes are unknown. The top book is carved from Petoskey stone, a fossilized coral with a honeycomb pattern from Lake Michigan. The central book is of Native American origin, carved from catlinite and decorated with a hand (front), a horseshoe (back), and a running [cow] (spine]. The bottom book is an English charm or fob, made of polished banded agate, embellished with an engraved gold foredge clasp and hanging loop.
