Walker Evans collected, classified, and grouped together these postcards. Included with this lot are three original tabbed category dividers inscribed in Evans's hand: "Factories." Evans's dividers came to the Museum separated from their cards.
After Evans's death, Lesley Baier, a graduate student at Yale, reorganized his collection of postcards. She created both sub categories and new categories. Included with this lot is an index card inscribed in Baier's hand: "Factories-Industrial," which came to the Museum grouped with the cards.
Included in this lot are two postcards from Maine and one from Pennsylvania stamped with Evans's name. Another postcard from Illinois has the initials "WE" in pencil. These relate to several publications of Evans's postcard collection in Fortune and Architectural Forum magazines.
