Basket tray

Lucy Makil Akimel O'odham/ Pima

Not on view

From the starting knot at its center to the finely braided rim, this basket shows Lucy Makil’s precision and mastery of technique. Radiating lines formed through a stepped progression define four subtle bands, each with a slight curvature at the edges, representing the four cardinal directions. Depending on the viewer’s perception, the fret-like lines appear to expand outward from the center or inward toward the vortex.
