Linen Sheet

New Kingdom

Not on view

Although it was once thought that this linen artifact was woven with fibers obtained from plants harvested before full maturity, microscopic fiber analysis proves mature fibers were used. We also know that weavers with an exceptional understanding of technological process, including producing thin plants in a high-density crop, plant selection during harvest, and fiber selection during pre-splicing and spinning, controlled the quality of the fibers. When such fine woven fabric is laundered, the warp and weft orientation can become distorted, which is evident in this piece.
