Poeta, calligrafo e maestro del buddismo Zen, Huang Tingjian riteneva che l’ arte calligrafica dovesse essere spontanea ed espressiva: “un’ illustrazione della mente”. Questo rotolo, con i suoi quasi milleduecento caratteri, è un capolavoro di scrittura calligrafica corsiva. Narra la rivalità tra due ufficiali: Lian Po, un famoso generale, e Lin Xiangru, un abile stratega. La trascrizione di Huang si interrompe bruscamente con le parole di Lin: “Quando due tigri lottano, una deve soccombere. Io mi comporto in questo modo perché per me il destino del nostro paese viene prima delle lotte private.” Letta alla luce delle lotte politiche interne della dinastia Song, la trascrizione di Huang diventa un potente atto d’accusa contro la faziosità che causò la sua messa al bando nel 1094.
