バージル杯

精巧なエナメルの装飾が施されているこの美しい濃紺色のヴェネツィアングラスの杯は、現存するこの種の装飾技法と規模を示す作品の中でも初期のものです。彩飾写本を彷彿させるエナメル装飾は、古代ローマの詩人バージルが魔術師として表れる、中世に人気のあった作り話を題材にしています。乙女フェビラに拒絶されたバージルは、魔術でローマのすべての焚き火を消し、市中のすべての女性が彼が彼女の体の中に埋め込んだ魔法の石炭でロウソクに火をつけ、それで焚き火をつけなおすまで、冷酷にもフェビラが市場で見世物になることを要求したという話です。
