メドゥーサの頭を掲げるペルセウス

カノーヴァは、1797年から1801年の間に、バチカン美術館にあった2世紀のローマ時代の《ベルヴェデーレのアポロ像》を基に、ペルセウスの彫像を制作しました。ペルセウスは、女神ミネルバの助けを得て殺害したメドゥーサの頭を掲げています。ローマ教皇ピウス7世は、カノーヴァのアトリエで展示されたこの像を購入し、ナポレオンによって一時的にフランスへ持ち去られた《ベルヴェデーレのアポロ像》があった場所に設置しました。当館所蔵の作品は、そのすぐ後にポーランドのヴァレリア・タルノフスカ伯爵夫人によって注文された数点の異なるバージョンのうちのひとつです。威厳を感じさせるしなやかな体のカノーヴァのペルセウスは、新古典派の英雄の美の模範となりました。
