マルシアスの胸像

ペルモーザーは、ドイツのバロック彫刻の第一人者でした。このマルシアスの胸像は、青年時代にイタリアへ旅した際にローマで制作されたものと思われます。ローマのスパーニャ宮殿にあったベルニーニ作の《呪われたる魂》(1619年)に取材したこの作品でペルモーザーは、マルシアスの慄然の処罰の場面を捉えています。サテュロスのマルシアスは音楽の腕比べでアポロに挑み、いましめとして生皮をはがれたのです。細めた目と、炎のような髪などは、ペルモーザーの誇張した感情表現の典型を示しています。大きく開いた口から、マルシアスのうめき声が聞こえるかのようです。
