ギリシャ美術では、神話に登場するヘラクレス、アキレス、テーセウスなどの英雄と、アマゾンの女戦士が戦う場面がよく描かれました。この戦士像では、武器を失い、右の乳房の下から血を流しており、キトン(内衣)が肩からはずれ、ウエストには馬の手綱をその場しのぎに巻いています。このような窮地の状況にもかかわらず、その表情は痛みも疲れも感じさせません。柱に軽く寄りかかり、右腕を優雅に頭に載せており、これは眠りまたは死を意味するポーズとされています。
