2 体の皇族像
古典時代以降、このような半裸の立像は、神像だけでなく、著名な人物を称える像としても作られました。これらの作品は、おそらくアウグストゥスからネロの時代までローマを支配したユリウス・クラウディウス朝の支配者を賛美する一連の肖像の一部だったと考えられます。半裸像に見られる姿勢は、紀元前 5 世紀のギリシャで活躍した最も有名な彫刻家の一人であるポリクレイトスによる古典時代の正統的な像を思い起こさせます。彼の作品を模倣することにより、これらの立像に英雄の威光を与える意図があったに違いありません。皇族の像は、生前もしくは死後を問わず市内の広場やバシリカ(集会所)、また劇場などの公共の場に一緒に設置されることがよくありました。
