アハシュエロス王の宮殿に赴くエステル妃

この見事な構図の習作は、旧約聖書に書かれているペルシアのアハシュエロス王の王妃エステルの物語を表しています。アハシュエロス王が王妃のユダヤ系の家系を知らずに、すべてのユダヤ人の殺害を命じたため、エステルは宮殿へ赴き慈悲を請いました。この場面はモンペリエ司教のフランソワ・ボスケへの贈物として描かれた素描と思われます。ボスケはそれ以前に、ロランによる《山上の垂訓》(ニューヨークのフリック・コレクション蔵)の対となる作品を依頼しました。ロランの作品の多くは聖書と神話の場面を題材としていますが、風景画家だった彼は、通常屋内の場面として描かれるこの物語を、全体に広がる自然光と幻想的な建物のある架空の風景の中に描いています。
