アマン・ジャンの肖像画

友人エドモンド・フランソワ・アマン・ジャン(1860–1936年)を描いたスーラによる素描は、19世紀の肖像画の最高傑作に数えられる作品です。アマン・ジャンとスーラはパリでともに絵画を学び、1879年にアトリエを共有しました。この肖像画は1883年にサロン・ド・パリで展示され、当時23歳のスーラにとって初めて一般に公開された作品でした。きめのある紙にコンテ・クレヨンで描いたスーラ独特の技法が、作品に輝きと明暗の調和を与えており、古典を感じさせるバランスのとれた横向きのポーズに、時代を超越した永遠の魅力が感じられます。
