カスパー・ダーヴィト・フリードリヒは、1807年に油彩を始める前に、その当時に作成された風景画の素描の中で最も魅力的な作品を描いていました。1805–06年頃に描かれたこの際立って大きな作品は、画家の生誕地に近いバルト海のリューゲン島でのスケッチ画に基づいています。フリードリヒの最高傑作のいくつかは、この簡素な島を題材としており、作品では自然への深い観察眼と隅々に行き渡るロマンチシズムが見事に融合しています。目の前に広がる自然を静かに見つめるひとりの人物像は、これ以降彼の作品に繰り返し現れるモチーフとなりました。
