ロンドンのファイン・アート・ソサエティの依頼により制作された12枚のうちの1枚であるこのエッチングは、ホイッスラーが1879年から1880年までヴェニスを訪れた際に描いたものです。慎重に線をエッチングした後にドライポイントでそれを強調し、2色刷りしたものです。リオ・デ・ラ・ファヴァと呼ばれる運河に面したグッソーニ宮殿の、豪華に装飾された扉口を黒インクで表しています。モノタイプのように、線がほとんど刻まれていない部分には褐色のインクが表現豊かに施され、前景の消えゆく水の流れと階段の奥にある薄暗い工房内の趣きある光の反射を表しています。
