須弥山曼荼羅
手の込んだタペストリー織りのこの曼荼羅(天界の図)は、密教とともに中国にもたらされたインドの図像を示しています。中心には神話の須弥山が、純潔さの象徴である蓮の花を頂き上下逆さに配置され、太陽(3本脚の鳥)と月(ウサギ)を表す中国の古来の記号が麓に描かれています。四方にある風景画はインドの神話に登場する4つの大陸を表していますが、中国の伝統的な「青緑山水」の様式を踏襲しています。細密に描かれた花模様の縁取りはチベット中部の図像に由来し、その中でも特に元朝の宮廷と深いつながりのあった僧院に特有のものです。
