仏陀、おそらく阿弥陀仏

阿弥陀信仰は、理想とは程遠い現世に悟りを開くことが不可能であることを強調し、悟りを求めるにふさわしい中間地点の極楽浄土への往生を願うものです。両腕の位置から阿弥陀仏と分かるこの像は、失われている手が思惟の印相を結んでいたと思われます。この像に使われた乾漆造の技法は、芯(木製が主)に粘土を塗り、漆に浸した麻布の端切れをその上から当てて乾燥させ、芯を取り除くという複雑なものでした。この技法は8 世紀に中国から日本へ伝わり普及しました。
