三王礼拝
イタリア美術において比類なき名声を博した画家として、ジョットは生前から揺ぎ無い地位を確立してきました。彼の絵には、それまで絵画と結び付けられることのなかった豊かな知性がうかがえます。三博士の前の幼子キリストの公現を表したこのパネルは、キリストの生涯を描いた7連作の1枚です。丹念に描かれた空間の中で、人物が自由に動いている様子が目を引きます。さらに、王のひとりが幼子を抱こうとして飼い葉桶へ手を差し伸べる動作と、聖母の心配そうな表情が印象的です。
