サンレミの精神病院に入院していた1年間、ゴッホは糸杉とオリーブの木が点々と生えるプロヴァンスの田園風景を描いた一連の絵を手がけました。1889年7月2日に弟のテオに宛てて書いた手紙で、6月に描き始めた最新作について「糸杉と少しばかりの小麦、ケシの花、青い空があり、多彩なスコットランドの格子縞のようで、アドルフ・モンティセリの絵のように絵具を厚塗りした」と説明しています。ゴッホはこの日差しの降り注ぐ風景画を自分の夏の絵の「最高作」と評価し、同じ構図で3点制作しています。それはアシペンによる素描(アムステルダム、ゴッホ美術館蔵)と、その秋に描いた油彩2点(ロンドン、ナショナル・ギャラリーと個人コレクション蔵)です。
