この作品に見られる構図はフリードリヒの絵の中で最も有名なものであり、この作品は3 部作の3枚目です。1作目(1819年)はドレスデン、2作目(1824年頃)はベルリンに所蔵されています。夕暮れの晩秋の森を散歩するふたりの男性が足を止めて沈む月を眺めている場面は、右手がフリードリヒ本人、左手が若く有能な画家のオーギュスト・ハインリヒであるとされています。月に魅了され熟考する敬虔な気持ちは、当時の詩、文学、哲学そして音楽にも表されていました。
