この絵は、イスマイル・アル=ジャザリが1315年に執筆した、発明に関する論文の挿絵の1枚です。象時計は特に精巧にできており、30分毎にドーム上の鳥が鳴き、その下にいる男性が龍の口の中に玉を落とし、象使いが突き棒で象をたたくというものです。この自動時計は中世ヨーロッパの市庁舎にあった凝った時計を思わせます。それは小さな彫像が動いて時間を滑稽に伝えるものでした。シリアのこの時期の手書きの本はほとんど現存しておらず、このフォリオは非常にまれな作品です。
