このフォリオの挿絵は12 世紀イランの詩人、ファリッド・アル=ディン・アッタールによる、神秘的叙事詩、「マンティック・アル=タイール」(鳥の言葉)の一場面を表したものです。シムルグ(究極的な霊的統一を表す神話の鳥)を探し求める魂を象徴する鳥が、中央右の岩にとまっているヤツガシラの指揮で巡礼を始めるため、牧歌的な風景の中に集まっています。注意深く練られた調和のある構図は、同じくこの本のなかにある15 世紀後半のティムール朝の細密画の様式と共通しています。しかしながら、物語には無関係の狩人がいること、イランで16 世紀になって使われるようになった武器、そして16世紀末–17世紀初頭の画家、ハビブ・アッラーの署名という3つの要素から、この作品が細密画より後に書かれたものであることが分かります。
